In Hawaiian cosmology, Maunakea is the origin place of the Hawaiian people. The Hawaiian genealogy teaches that the summit of the mountain is the meeting place of Earth Mother, Papahānaumoku, and Sky Father, Wākea and that the Hawaiian people are directly descended from this union. Therefore, Maunakea is utmost sacred ground; it is the piko (umbilical cord) of Native Hawaiian existence.
I spent a few months driving from Piʻihonua to Puʻuhonua Puʻuhuluhulu Maunakea almost daily to help run the radio station, learn from elders, listen to moʻolelo and lend a helping hand when it was needed. I often brought my camera to take a few photos like this one.
I like to serve hot chai and talk story with kiaʻi, alakaʻi and kūpuna and present them with my newest work. Here I'm offering a traditional ho‘okupu to the kūpuna during noon protocol. They gracefully received the poster I gifted them and gave me big smiles and heart felt honi greatings in return.
